April Tips

April can really see allotments come to life with people spending a lot more time in them. The risk of frosts is finally starting to reduce but April showers can present their own set of challenges. Some of those things sown early in the year both indoors and outdoors should by now be starting to flourish. As the weather begins to warm, despite April showers, it can be important to begin to water regularly to ensure crops thrive – it is also important to nail down the feeding requirements of your crops as they begin their journeys past seedling. April is also the time to start collecting rainwater to last you through some of the warmer drier months.

It is important in April to consider when you would like to be harvesting crops out of your allotment. To have staggered harvests, make sure you continue to raise seedlings and sow new seeds to allow crops to flourish across a longer time period.

April can be when pesky weeds and pests begin to rear their heads. Make sure you’re ensuring that your crops have enough protection. It can also be a good time to begin preparing more beds, thinning out seedlings, and putting in supporting canes as plants grow.
