Transfer a secure tenancy to someone else
It is possible to transfer a secure tenancy to a spouse or, in some cases, a relative. This is usually due to a death of a secure tenant, or other unusual circumstances.
The right to transfer normally depends on how the people involved are related and we will also consider the size of the property and the housing needs of the applicant. Whatever the situation we will always help you find a suitable home.
Secure tenancies created before 1 April 2012 can be transferred once. For example, if you take over a tenancy when someone dies, you can’t then pass on the tenancy to anyone else.
Secure tenancies created after 1 April 2012 can only be transferred to a spouse. No one else has any legal rights to the tenancy.
