If you are a disabled person living alone or you live with someone who has a disability you may be able to claim a discount on your Council Tax bill
Severe mental impairment discount
A discount may be available if you or someone who lives with you is over 18 and has been diagnosed as living with a severe mental impairment (SMI)
Carers discounts and disregards
Council Tax discounts are available for residents who provide care for others
Residents in prison or on remand
You will not count as an adult living in a property for Council Tax if you’re in prison or on remand
Class E - moved to a care home or hospital to receive care
If a property is empty due to a resident moving out to receive care permanently in a nursing home, hospital, or care home the property may be eligible for a Class E Council Tax exemption
Property exemptions
If your property meets certain criteria you could claim an exemption from all or some of the Council Tax
Empty and Unoccupied Homes
Local councils can vary the discounts that are applied to empty homes. For long-term empty homes they can apply Council Tax premiums intended to encourage owners to bring an empty property back into use
Council Tax and Uninhabitable Discount
If your property is undergoing major repair work and/or structural alterations you can apply for discount on your Council Tax bill up to a maximum of 12 months
