Sporty Spring Clean for Redditch

Redditch Borough Council are encouraging residents to have a clear out of their sports clothing this spring to help break down barriers to participation in sport.

A new initiative has been launched to redistribute unwanted sports kit to areas of the Borough where new Couch to 5K sessions are starting up and it could be reused.

Residents wishing to donate their unwanted gear can place it in the donation bin inside the Abbey Stadium reception area.

Once donated, the unwanted clothing will be distributed to areas where there are new Couch to 5K courses soon starting up, in Batchley, Woodrow and Winyates.

Redditch Borough Council Sports Development Officer, Hayley Gwilliam, said: “Couch to 5K is always one of our most popular offerings and it is perfect for those wanting to start their fitness journey, but it isn’t always that easy for everyone to get started.

“Whether that be through fear of judgement or lack of sports kit, we want to make it as easy as possible to take part in, so we are working with partners and residents alike to remove as many barriers to participation as possible.”

“I encourage everyone to have a rummage through wherever you keep your sports clothes, as even one item donated could make a big difference in someone taking part or not!”

Local businesses such as PureGym are getting involved and donating kit as well as three running clubs in STARS, Redditch Community Runners and Kingfisher Harriers.
