The Mayor of Redditch

Councillor Juma Begum

I am deeply honoured to have been elected as the Mayor of Redditch.

Born and raised in the UK to parents who emigrated from Bangladesh in the 1960s, I come from a family where my father was a successful entrepreneur managing multiple businesses, and my mother was a dedicated homemaker.

Five years ago, I chose Redditch as my permanent home, relocating here while continuing my full-time work in Birmingham. In my spare time, I have been actively volunteering in Redditch, gaining valuable insights into the community and its residents.

I am a proud parent of two wonderful sons who embody respect and kindness. Since 2022, I have served as a councillor for the Greenlands Woodrow and Wirehill, now the new Greenlands and Lakeside ward. In addition to my role as a councillor, I have been an active member of the Audit, Governance & Standards Committee, as well as involved in planning and licensing.

Throughout my career, I have been dedicated to enhancing the prospects of marginalised individuals and communities, with a particular focus on the elderly, disabled, women and young girls, and mental health. My passion for social improvement is reflected in my successful fundraising efforts for various charitable projects benefiting these groups.

Outside of my professional life, I enjoy travelling and have a keen interest in dragon boat racing. I participated in the women’s teams of the charity boat race Nowka Bais in Birmingham in 2018 and 2019, and I support the women’s bell boating regatta held annually in the West Midlands.

I am committed to serving Redditch and its community with integrity and transparency.

The Mayors Consort is Mr. Riyaadh Chowhury. The Deputy Mayor is Cllr. Joanne Kane.
