Environmental permits
Certain industrial processes have the capacity to pollute our environment. As a result they are regulated via a system of environmental permits which minimise pollution from the installation through conditions. If you operate a regulated activity you must have an environmental permit.
Some regulated activities

- Energy – petrol, burning fuel, gasification and refining activities
- Metals - manufacturing and processing metals
- Minerals – clay, lime, cement, ceramics, glass, asbestos
- Chemicals – coatings, manufacturing chemicals, pharmaceuticals or explosives, storing chemicals in bulk
- Waste - incinerating waste, operating landfills, recovering waste
- Solvents - Di-isocyanate, Dry Cleaners
- Animal and plant – treatments, Maggot breeding, intensive pig and poultry farming
- Other – rubber, manufacturing paper, pulp and board, treating timber products, coating, treating textiles and printing, manufacturing new tyres.
How do permits control pollution?
We attach conditions to the permit to minimise pollution. This may include:
- Pollution control equipment to remove or reduce pollution to the environment
- Routine monitoring by the permit holder
- Regular visits and inspections
- Other measures to reduce harmful emissions.
